Southwest Ranches, FL is a very young city with an inspiring history. In 1996, a neighboring city petitioned the county to annex an area that included Southwest Ranches. Hundreds of citizens from the unincorporated Southwest Ranches piled into the hearing to protest the annexation. In response to the overwhelming protest, the State passed a bill that would call for the citizens to take a vote in March of 2000. They would have the choice to be annexed into a nearby city or become their own town. In March 2000, citizens voted overwhelmingly to form a new town, and thus, Southwest Ranches was officially founded.
Since forming the town nearly 16 years ago, the citizens of Southwest Ranches have taken care to ensure that they live in a unique town all their own. The town is primarily residential and the local pastime is horseback-riding. Southwest Ranches even has laws that prevent homes from being built on less than one acre of land to preserve the rural and horseback-riding lifestyles of the citizens.
