Throughout Miami-Dade County, numerous museums contribute to the area’s burgeoning art scene, including the Frost Art Museum, Miami Children’s Museum, and the Lowe Art Museum. It’s also an excellent opportunity to escape into nature for a weekend, being in proximity to the famous Everglades National Park, as well as being a sports metropolis. The area is the home of famous teams such as the NBA’s Miami Heat and the MLB’s Miami Marlins.
The incredibly diverse neighborhoods are part of what makes the Miami area such a desirable area to live (not to mention the state’s world-famous weather). If you’re planning a local move to the Miami-Dade area, we’ve included a list of activities and highlights of the surrounding cities and towns:
First, if you love art, fashion and culture, Bal Harbour is not-to-be-missed. Bal Harbour Shops is world-famous for its designer boutiques for women and men, including Balenciaga, Chanel and Saint Laurent. And for patrons of the arts, the concentration of galleries and museums is world-class, and the annual Art-Basel Miami art fair (a major barometer for coming trends in the art world) is just a short drive south.
Further north, on Collins Ave from Bal Harbour, is the gorgeous Sunny Isles Beach. Its world-famous beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, with numerous resorts overlooking the dazzling white sand. Sunny Isles Beach is also one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Miami (it’s affectionately known as Little Moscow). And just to the south, located between Sunny Isles and Bal Harbour, you will find Haulover Park, the largest public nude beach in the United States, which attracts over 1.3 million bold, and bare, visitors every year.
Outside of the Miami Beach area is Key Biscayne. This largely undeveloped barrier island, accessible only by the Rickenbacker Causeway south of downtown Miami, is a great way to escape the bustle of Miami for a day. Home to the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Crandon Park and the Crandon Golf Course, there’s no shortage of family activities. Fish in the surf or from the docks, bicycle around the island, visit the historic lighthouse and grab a fresh seafood meal at the Lighthouse Café nearby. Also of note is the famous historic landmark of Stiltsville—a collection of seven historic houses built on pilings out on the shallow tidal flats.

Moving inland, you’ll find the quiet shore town of Coconut Grove. This leafy neighborhood is well-known for sidewalk cafes, plenty of green spaces, and some of the best seafood in Miami. In north Coconut Grove, the Viczaya is a gorgeous Italian villa with luscious gardens around the property, and a collection of beautifully-preserved Italian furniture and early 20th century art. In the south, the walkable downtown is host to small businesses, restaurants and the Coconut Grove Art Festival.
Further south, you’ll find the affluent suburban village of Pinecrest. The village consistently ranks in the most expensive zip codes in the country, and its biggest draw is the concentration of celebrity homes. If you hang around the area’s cafes, restaurants and bars for long enough, you’re almost guaranteed to meet the likes of Iggy Pop or Dion Waters.
Next on our list is the city of Homestead, the second oldest city in the Miami-Dade area (after Miami itself), and home of the Homestead-Miami Speedway, and the southern-most city in the Miami-Dade area. Homestead is only an hour’s drive from the heart of the Everglades National Park, where you’ll find airboat tours, opportunities for backcountry camping and world-class bird-watching. For race fans, you absolutely won’t want to miss the NASCAR Cup Series finales hosted at the Miami-Homestead Speedway.
Last on our list, and moving back north of the downtown area, you’ll find Miami Shores. This is a sleepy village perfect for families, retirees, and anyone working in the greater Miami area looking for a quiet suburban neighborhood. It has commercial amenities, and is the home of a sizable country club called the Miami Shores Country Club.
