Here are two common moving scams to be careful of when you are planning a move
This is a scam that is very common for interstate relocations, and why it's important to avoid moving brokers when doing an interstate move. A moving broker is a company that may look like a moving company from their website, but they are actually a company that sells moving jobs to actual moving companies. You always want to deal directly with moving companies when possible.
Interstate moves are priced based on weight and mileage so to take advantage of this, a broker will give you an estimate on your job that is vague or often unrealistically low just so you will agree to their terms so they can get their commission for referring your job. Once the actual moving company comes to your house though, they will give you a realistic price which will often be much more than you expected - but by then it will be too late.
The best way to avoid this tactic is by doing your research and making sure you’re getting a quote for your move from an actual moving company and not a broker. When you call for a quote you can always ask if the company will actually be the one that fulfills your move or not. If they cannot give you a direct answer, you are likely talking to a broker and not a real moving company.
This scam is something you should keep an eye out for if you are doing a local or interstate relocation.
If the first page of your estimate says “Binding Price,” there's a chance you’ll need to check the fine print.
Take a careful look at the last page of your estimate and look out for terms like “based on the inventory provided” or “not including the following.” These are big red flags that the price you are being quoted may change drastically by the end of your move.
Both of these phrases leave the door open for moving companies to add charges to your move throughout the course of your job. It’s most common for companies to use things like extra packing materials or needing to move items up or down stairs as reasons to add extra costs to your move.
Always closely check your estimate and never be afraid to ask questions. Never let a company take advantage of you because you didn’t speak up.
If there is any language on your estimate that seems like it might be there to leave an opening for a company to change your quoted price either ask for clarification or look at another company that gives you a clearer quote.
