Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a pleasant seaside village situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the City of Fort Lauderdale. It is about 30 miles from Miami and 33 miles from Palm Beach.
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea was founded in 1924 and first incorporated in 1927. However, its charter was revoked shortly after, during the Great Depression, and Florida didn’t recognize the community as an independent municipality until 1947. Which means that this community founded some 96 years ago is only 73 years young.
While some South Florida cities and towns have large, towering condos, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea has strict building height standards that have helped it maintain its small-town charm, along with protecting valuable real estate. The population is about 6,056 permanent residents. In the winter, the population grows to more than 10,000 people.
Lauderdale-By-The Sea is about 1.5 square miles and primarily residential. It’s known as South Florida’s Beach Diving Capital. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular pastimes. Coral reefs are just 100 yards off the beach.
Visitors can also explore the SS Copenhagen, a 19th-century British cargo steamer, which struck a reef three-quarters of a mile off-shore in 1900. Waterproof maps help underwater explorers find their way around the shipwreck.
